Chiropractic was founded Sept 18, 1895 by D.D. Palmer. He performed the first chiropractic adjustment on Harvey Lillard, a deaf janitor. Harvey said he had lost his hearing 17 years earlier when he bent over and heard a popping sound in his spine. D.D. Palmer had seen Harvey before, but on this day he noticed an unusual positioning of his upper cervical spine.
Curious, he convinced Harvey to lie down on a table for examination, and proceeded to move his hands over Harvey's spine. Stopping at the area in his neck, Palmer then applied force in an effort to move his spine back to a normal position, and a remarkable thing happened: Harvey's hearing had returned! It was then that Chiropractic began. D.D. Palmer opened the first Chiropractic School in 1897.
His son, B.J. Palmer became responsible for the school and was the real developer of the profession. He was involved with extensive research and secured a place for Chiropractic in the health sciences. Thus was born the science of chiropractic - taken from the Greek "hand practice" or "manipulated by hand."
