Chiropractic is a drug free health care system that enhances your bodies innate ability to heal itself. Getting a chiropractic adjustment is like having the lights turned on. Chiropractors correct subluxations. A subluxation is when the bones of the spine (vertebra) move out of place and it changes the way the brain communicates with the body. The muscles of the body have special sensors in them that tell the brain where they are in relation to others (proprioception).
These sensors can detect a micrometer of movement. That means if a bone is a micrometer out of place your brain knows it and starts to make corrective action. When vertebrae are stuck out of place we lose proprioception, this is called nociception. Nociception causes the body to create the stress response. The stress response is also called sympathetic response (fight or flight).
If the body is in fight or flight it goes into preservation mode, not building mode. When a chiropractor gives the adjustment to the spine, it mobilizes the joints, restores proprioception and allows the body to move into parasympathetic (relaxation and healing).
